Most Rev. Jacques Fabre-Jeune, CS, Bishop of Charleston, released the following letter to the faithful regarding the results of the 2022 general election:
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
We were fortunate to participate in the most recent election of our state and federal leaders as citizens of this nation. While every election comes and goes with celebrations and disappointments, we must focus our energy on crossing the political divide to promote the common good for all people.
As we begin this next political term, we will act with charity to work with those around us, including those that hold different opinions. No matter what political party, our leaders must work together to restore unity and respect in our state and country.
We are called to share the light of Christ in our communities. As we live in accordance with good law, let us strive to follow God’s order, maintain justice and seek unity as Catholic Christians. We must leave a good legacy for the next generation.
Laws are necessary to govern our society, but laws created without love for the human person are useless. We pray that our elected leaders enact legislation that recognizes and values the dignity of everyone; we are made in the image and likeness of God.
We thank those who work in public service, and we offer our sincere prayers for their success in the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty.
In Christ’s Love,
Most Rev. Jacques Fabre-Jeune, CS
Bishop of Charleston
